From Humble Beginnings...
Moley Industries was started in 1990 by John Moley, operating out of his garage as a small electric motor repair shop.
Over nearly 40 years, John, his son Nick, his neice Katie, and Nick's wife Liz, have transformed the family-owned business into a regional industrial repair shop, selling and supporting heavy-duty attachments—such as magnets, grapples, shears, and pulverizers—for the scrap, demolition, and railroad industries.
The Pain of Change vs. The Pain of Staying the Same
"The pain of change is usually what holds you back, but we realized the pain of staying the same was much worse." - Liz Moley, Moley Industries
As a small, family-owned company, Moley Industries initially opted for a Professional Employer Organization (PEO) model to handle their HR and payroll needs.
Unfortunately, the PEO/co-employer model is outdated and impersonal. Liz Moley, Director of Administration, described their old process as akin to working with a "stone and a chisel," relying on physical punch clocks and manual data entry.
When their PEO migrated them to a new software platform - iSolved, - things went from bad to worse. Due to the PEO's restricted setup, Moley Industries was given zero administrative access to their own data.
Employees were frustrated before they even started their shifts because of a glitchy mobile app that made clocking in nearly impossible.
Behind the scenes, Liz was spending between 5 and 15 hours every single week untangling payroll errors, fighting with paid time off (PTO) banks, and struggling to pull the basic financial reports her team needed.
Friction, Repulsion, Persistence, and Attraction
Ready for a change, Liz reached out to an HR consultant named Serena Lubacz, who highly recommended Complete Payroll.
However, upon learning that Complete Payroll also used isolved - the exact software platform that was causing her team so much grief, and was the impetus for switching in the first place - Liz was understandably hesitant. But at the urging of Serena, Liz agreed to meet with Stephanie after all.
After a transparent conversation, Liz realized the software wasn't the problem—the restrictive PEO version was. Complete Payroll proved that with their open-access model, Moley Industries would have full visibility and control to customize PTO schedules, prevailing wage rules, and reporting to fit their exact needs.
After getting buy-in from a skeptical leadership team, Moley Industries made the leap.
Complete Payroll provided an implementation specialist who mapped out their business "soup to nuts".
To ensure perfect accuracy without disrupting employee benefits, Complete Payroll ran parallel payrolls alongside Moley's old system through the holidays, resulting in a flawless, zero-hiccup launch in January.
The Solution: Measurable Time Savings, and Immeasurable Insights
Since partnering with Complete Payroll, Moley Industries has completely transformed its back-office operations:
-
Massive Time Savings: Liz’s payroll administration time plummeted from up to 15 hours a week down to a maximum of just two hours.
-
Empowered Reporting: Previously, the finance manager had to wait weeks for basic data. Today, she has her own customized access to log in and pull financial reports, tax forms, and data for complex insurance audits whenever she needs it.
-
Seamless Employee Journey: Moley Industries now uses the platform for the entire lifecycle of an employee. All onboarding paperwork, I-9s, timekeeping, and even physical asset tracking (like keys and building badges) are managed securely in one compliant location.
An Irresistable Attraction
Beyond the software, Moley Industries found a true cultural match. Complete Payroll proved to be a responsive partner that takes customer service as seriously as Moley does.
If a question arises, the Complete Payroll team doesn't just guess—they do the research and return with strategic, honest solutions. Even better, they bring a sense of humor to a traditionally dry industry, assuring clients on their hold music that "nobody is scrolling on Facebook" while they hunt down a representative.
"I can't say I have a bad thing to say about working with Complete Payroll. When I hear 'Welcome to Payroll Country,' it makes me smile. It makes me feel welcome to call them or lean on them for assistance." – Liz Moley, Moley Industries
